Stability — the product over time

Stability testing for cosmetic products

A structured assessment of how a cosmetic formulation changes over time and under defined stress conditions, supporting shelf-life justification and packaging compatibility.

Parameters

What we monitor

The relevant parameters depend on the product and may include appearance, colour, odour, pH, viscosity, homogeneity and phase separation. The protocol and observation points are selected according to the formulation, packaging and intended use.

Packaging

Packaging compatibility matters

The packaging material, closure, permeability and dispensing system can affect water loss, oxidation, preservative performance and other properties of the formulation. For that reason, part of the stability programme should normally be performed in the intended final packaging where practical.

Framework

ISO/TR 18811

ISO/TR 18811 provides a technical framework for designing cosmetic stability studies. It does not prescribe one universal test programme for every cosmetic product, so the protocol must be justified for the specific formulation.

Questions

What clients ask most

Does a stability test determine shelf life on its own?

No. Stability data are an important part of the justification, but they are considered together with the formulation, packaging, microbiological data and safety assessment.
