Cosmetic product development: from idea to finished product

Razvoj kozmetičnih izdelkov: Od ideje do končnega izdelka

The cosmetic product development process is one of constantly tracking trends and innovations, of research, and of technical challenges. Every cosmetic product you see on a shop shelf today is the fruit of months of planning, trials and testing, and of continual refinement to both its properties and the manufacturing process. What does it take for a product idea to become reality? Below, we look at the key stages of this absorbing process.

Market analysis and defining user needs

Every successful cosmetic product begins with a thorough analysis of the market, the customer, and comparable competing products. Before we start designing a formulation, we have to understand what the target group wants and needs.

No cosmetic product is meant for 'everyone' — if nothing else, you have to consider how you intend to sell it. In pink packaging, or black? On TikTok, or in a magazine for older readers? Every target audience has its own expectations, and those feed through into the formulation. Are our target users drawn to natural ingredients? Are they asking for innovative answers to specific skin concerns? Are these people more concerned with caring for teenage skin, or mature skin? Alongside the target group, the trends it currently follows and buys into matter too. One of the more universal of those is certainly the move towards natural cosmetics and environmentally friendly solutions, although in practice, committing to one trend or the other often calls for compromises.

Market analysis also covers studying the competition, the latest ingredient innovations, and the regulatory requirements of different countries. At this point we define the product's objectives — its purpose and effect, texture, fragrance, appearance, packaging, and intended route to sale, all in relation to the target group of consumers.

Formulation and ingredient selection

Once the concept is clear, the real product development begins — formulation. Our specialists in biochemistry, dermatology and biomedicine will first work with you on selecting the active ingredients that will deliver the functionality the product requires. An important part of the process is that those ingredients are not only effective but safe in use and compliant with regulatory requirements. It matters, too, that they are as easy to source as possible, because that is the part that can cause you real headaches.

Cosmetic formulations have to pass a battery of tests — dermatological and microbiological alike — so that we can establish the product will suit different skin types. Particular attention goes to sustainable ingredients and environmentally friendly formulas, as the market increasingly demands cosmetics with minimal environmental impact.

The formulation is then realised as a prototype, which we test together. We identify any shortcomings or changes needed. We correct the formulation, and make a new prototype. We keep doing this until the product meets every expectation. Once it does, the next stage begins.

Quality and safety testing

Testing cosmetic products is a critical stage, because it is essential that the product causes neither allergy nor irritation. With our experience and our choice of ingredients, we effectively do this work during development, so you never receive a prototype that would not be safe to use. It remains true, though, that certain active raw materials — plant-derived ones above all, essential oils and other extracts specifically — can provoke an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction in a certain percentage of users. We investigate those risks and define them precisely at this point, and we discuss them with you.

This stage also checks the formulation's stability over time, its sensitivity to light and heat, and its resistance to microorganisms. All of this information is essential if the product is to pass the strict dermatological and safety requirements laid down in the cosmetics industry. That is how we establish that the product not only meets high safety standards but complies with legislation and regulation, such as ISO certification. Preparation of the documentation follows.

High-technology manufacturing

Once the formulation is confirmed, the product moves into the manufacturing process. Our production is built on state-of-the-art technology that allows aseptic manufacture, meaning that products are made without contact with contaminants. Using almost entirely automated production lines, we hold every product to a consistent standard of quality and safety.

Our manufacturing is designed with sustainability in mind. Because we sit in a natural, unspoilt setting, we are especially attentive to reducing our environmental footprint. We use renewable energy sources, and we cut down on packaging that cannot be recycled efficiently, favouring biodegradable options where possible.

Packaging and distribution

In cosmetics, packaging plays an important part in creating appeal for the end user. Products have to be not only functional but visually inviting, since their appearance is the first contact with the buyer. Alongside careful design of that appearance, a growing trend is sustainable packaging, which respects environmental standards while staying practical. Not least, packaging also has to protect the product from outside influences and preserve its quality.

Designing the packaging in line with their own brand is something the client takes care of, and we encourage clients to handle packaging procurement themselves as well, following a joint discussion, of course, about the properties it has to meet. If a client cannot manage that logistically, we are glad to help with procurement too. Our distribution routes are carefully planned, as we work to reduce the transport burden and keep products fresh. That way the product reaches the end buyer as quickly as possible, without compromising its quality.

The cosmetic product development process is demanding and runs through many stages, but with good organisation and an innovative approach we can create products capable of delighting customers anywhere in the world. Through advanced technology, sustainable practice and a focus on quality, our company makes certain that every product leaving our hands is of the highest standard.
